Liberate trees – become a volunteer

Friends of Susan & Elizabeth Islands is a volunteer group assisting SEIRLM. We have monthly working bees where we encourage natural bush regeneration by controlling weeds – mostly liberating trees from vines and pulling weeds from areas where regeneration is happening. It’s fun, great exercise, useful, sociable, and oddly satisfying. Please join us – for regular or one-off visits. Email us at antvanharen@gmail.com to find out more. Our facebook page is Friends of Susan and Elizabeth Islands.

Safety

SEIRLM has legal obligations to provide a safe workplace for volunteers and to provide adequate supervision.  Volunteers will normally only work on the islands under the supervision of a SEIRLM member or NPWS staff member and in accordance with the policies of SEIRLM and NPWS.  Volunteers who carry out work in accordance with the attached guidelines, and under the supervision of the Trust/NPWS, will be covered by the Crown Lands Office insurance and NPWS volunteer workers insurance.

Visitors must be aware that the islands are ‘wild places’. There are no made pathways – only rough tracks.

Always wear stout footwear and protective clothing to cover arms and legs, and a hat.

Be aware of mosquitoes, ticks, leeches (following wet weather) and snakes.

Bring personal water bottles.

Keep with the group at all times.

If using power tools or swinging/slashing tools – eg cane knives, keep a safe distance from others, but always stay in sight of the group.

Comply with any COVD 19 rules in place at the time.

We thank Highways and Byways – A Community of Service for funding our track maintenance on both islands. Their generosity makes it safer and easier for volunteer bush regenerators to walk the island.
